Artifact #4: PBIS Conflict Mini-Unit Plan (TE 848)
Goals: 2
Standards: 1, 2, and 5
As a part of my work for Talent Development at a middle school in Detroit I supported their efforts to create a positive climate among the students and staff by working on several PBIS initiatives. This process had been stalled throughout most of the year, low teacher buy in. This lesson plan and month long set of activities was meant to serve as a kick off and demonstration of how PBIS could work for them. Around the same time I was introduced to a quote from Voltaire.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.
At the same time I was taking a course at Michigan State on reading and writing instruction. A requirement of which was to develop a lesson plan that focused on literacy. This lesson plan is by no means perfect, nor is how we put the plan into action. Several teachers were still resistant. Some students did care that they were being given prizes for good behavior. But at the same time we did reach some of them, both teachers and students. Many were touched by the superlative awards (Best Dressed, Biggest Smile, etc) they got. Doing this month long kick off and model PBIS Action Plan taught me that Voltaire was right. We waited most of the year for "the perfect," this plan was put into action until May, and the result was only a month of "the good."
